Cope! is a non-profit society that assists people with neuromuscular disorders to attain their personal goals by:
- Providing information to enable our members to make informed decisions regarding all aspects of daily living
- Collaborating with other organizations to develop community resources that will better support our members
- Developing communication networks
- Advocating and promoting the interests of our members
Cope! was founded in 1992 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada by people with neuromuscular disorders and a number of others who provided various supports to them.
Membership is open to people with neuromuscular disorders, their families, friends and others involved in a supportive capacity.
Cope!:
- Publishes the Fast Track newsletter
- Links members to one another through the Internet and by phone
- Actively participates in conferences, committees and projects that concern our members
- Assists members in acquiring affordable, accessible housing and related resources
- Provides information packages to and consults with schools, government agencies and community groups
- Maintains this web site
Cope!:
- Believes in giving the power and control to its members to determine, design, direct and manage their own goals
- Believes in the equality of all, yet values and respects individual differences
- Believes that all individuals want to attain meaningful lives as they choose
- Respects confidentiality and values honesty and integrity
- Values the term interdependence rather than independence since it indicates a more complete process and a sense of working with others to attain a fuller self
- Is accountable to its members
